24. veebruaril 1919 Eesti Vabariigi esimesel aastapäeval kinnitati Eesti Panga esimene põhikiri. Sama aasta 3. mail kanti panga pearaamatusse 10 miljonit marka, mille valitsus oli panga põhikapitaliks määranud. Seda kuupäeva loetakse Eesti Panga tegevuse alguseks.
Eesti Pank on riigi keskpank. Panga peaeesmärkideks on kindlustada Eesti krooni väärtuse säilimine, pangandussüsteemi stabiilsus ja turvalisus, arendada makse- ja arveldussüsteemi ning tagada häireteta sularaharinglus.
1940. aastal, pärast Eesti Vabariigi annekteerimist, reorganiseeriti Eesti Pank NSV Liidu Riigipanga kontoriks. 19. detsembril 1991 kuulutas Eesti Vabariigi Ülemnõukogu Eesti Panga 1919. aastal loodud panga õigusjärglaseks. 20. juunil 1992 hakkas Eestis ainsa seadusliku maksevahendina kehtima Eesti kroon, mille kurss fikseeriti Saksa marga suhtes. 1998. aasta lõpul fikseeriti Eesti krooni kurss ka Euroopa ühise arveraha euro suhtes.

The first statutes of the Bank of Estonia were adopted on the first anniversary of the Republic of Estonia, 24 February 1919. On 3 May that year 10 million marks, appointed by the government as the bank’s stock capital, was entered into the bank’s accounts. That date is regarded as the beginning of the Bank of Estonia’s operations. The Bank of Estonia was the country’s central bank. Its duties included maintenance of the value of the Estonian kroon, stability and safety of the banking system, development of the payments and accounting system and flawless cash circulation. In 1940, after Estonia was annexed by the Soviet Union, the Bank of Estonia was reduced into an office of the Soviet Union’s State Bank. As the Bank of Estonia was reestablished on 19 December 1991, the Estonian Supreme Council declared it a legal successor of the Bank of Estonia founded in 1919. On 20 June 1992 it introduced the Estonian kroon as the only legal tender in the country. Initially, the kroon was pegged to the German mark, and from the launching of the European Monetary Union, to the euro. The stamp features the Bank of Estonia building in Tallinn and the anniversary logo.
