Pärnu, south-western Estonia's principal industrial city and traffic hub, lies at the estuary of the Pärnu River where it flows into Pärnu Bay. First mentioned in records in 1251 in connection with the inauguration of the local cathedral and the seat of a bishop, it still retains some its medieval fortifications, such as the Red Tower, parts of a bastion and a moat, as well as the 17th century Tallinn Gate.
Pärnu's present reputation as Estonia's most important resort town was laid in 1838 with the institution of a bathing establishment where mud bath treatment began to be offered later in the 19th century. The city's wonderful sandy beach, numerous hotels and sanatoriums offering mud bath and seawater treatment attract tens of thousand of tourists and patients from both Estonia and the neighbouring countries.
The stamp features the main building (1927, by Olev Siinmaa, Erich Wolffeldt and Aleksander Nürnberg) of the Pärnu Mud Baths.
