Census in 2000
|
A population and housing census will be take place in Estonia from
31 March to 9 April 2000, with the aim of collecting comperehensive
information about the structure and distribution of the population and
housing.
The first ever count of the population in present-day Estonia was carried
out by the Danes after their conquest of the northern part of the country
in 1219-20. In more modern times, the practice of counting the
population began in late 17th century, but the first census to cover the
whole of present-day Estonia was held in 1881. In the 20th century,
censuses have been more or less regular in Estonia, the last of them took
place in 1989. The census of 2000 will be the tenth in Estonia since
1881.
