Friedrich Robert Faehlmanni, sündinud 31. detsembril 1798, mäletatakse tänapäeval eeskätt kui 19. sajandi teise poole rahvusliku liikumise üht eelkäijat.
1827. aastal Tartu Ülikooli arsti kutse ja doktorikraadiga lõpetanud Faehlmann pidas kõiges silmas eeskätt oma rahva huve.
Ta pühendas palju tähelepanu eesti keele ja eestlaste vaimse kultuuri uurimise ergutamisele. Sel eesmärgil asutati tema initsiatiivil 1838. aastal Õpetatud Eesti Selts.
Faehlmann oli aastatel 1843-1850 ÕES-i esimees, aastast 1824 Tartu Ülikooli eesti keele lektor ning mitmete tänapäevalgi laialt tuntud rahvaluuleaineliste lugude (“Koit ja Hämarik” jt) autor.
Oma ettekandes ÕES-is 1839. aastal esitas Faehlmann rahvaluulest tuntud Kalevipoja kujule toetuva rahvuseepose loomise mõtte, mille Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald hiljem ellu viis.
Friedrich Robert Faehlmann, born 31 December 1798, is remembered in Estonia because of his role as a paver of the way to the national movement in the second half of the 19th century. A 1827 graduate of Tartu University’s medical faculty, Faehlmann kept in mind the good of his people in everything he did. He devoted a lot of attention to promoting study of the Estonian language and the Estonians’ spiritual world. With this purpose, the Learned Estonian Society was founded at his initiative in 1838. He was chairman of the society in 1843-50, lecturer of Estonian at Tartu University since 1824, and author of folklore-based stories widely known until today. In a report to the Learned Estonian Society in 1839, Faehlmann put forth the idea of a national epic, based on folk tales about a legendary king, Kalevipoeg. The epic poem was later written by a younger colleague of Faehlmann’s, Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald, and published in 1857-1861.
