Gustavus II Adolphus, King of Sweden/ 081-11-1994

Rootsi kuningas 1611-1632. Tema valitsemisajal (1629) laienes 1561. aastal Põhja-Eestis kehtestunud Rootsi võim ka Lõuna-Eestile. 1632. aastal rajati Gustav II Adolf dekreedi alusel Tartu Ülikool.

Gustavus II Adolphus (b. dec. 1594 Stockholm, d. 6 nov. 1632 Lützen), King of Sweden 1611-1632. His victories on the battlefield turned Sweden into one of the major powers in Europe. Estonia belonged to Sweden from 1645 (parts of Estonia since 1561) to 1710. The 17th century was an age of upswing for Estonia, which is known in the popular tradition as the ’good old Swedich time’. Among other things such an image was created as a result of administrative and judical reforms introduced during the reign of King Gustavus II Adolphus. The King promotes the development of commerce and industry, favouring the setting up of manufactories. Of particularly importance was the emphasisi on education during his years in office. The first gymnasiums in Estonia were founded in 1630 in Tartu and in 1631 in Tallinn. Tartu University, founded on the basis of a decree signed by Gustavus II Adolphus, became one of the foremost centres of science and education in the Baltic countries. Gustavus II Adolphus visited Estonia on three occasions – oftener than any other Swedich monarh.
