Tänu Tallinna lahe soodsale asendile ja tingimustele korraldatakse seal purjetamisvõistlusi juba alates möödunud sajandi 80. aastatest. 1980. aastal viidi Tallinna lahel läbi XXII Moskva Olümpiamängude purjeregatt.
1998. aasta augustis toimuvad Tallinna lahel juunioride MM-võistlused jahiklassis “470”, milles Eesti sportlased on viimastel aastatel saavutanud suurimat edu. Kaksikvennad Tõnu ja Toomas Tõniste võitsid medalid kahel järjestikusel olümpial – 1988. aastal Söulis hõbe- ja 1992. aastal Barcelonas pronksmedali, samuti esinesid nad edukalt Atlanta Olümpiamängude regatil.

Thanks to the favourable location of and contitions in Tallinn Bay, yacht races have taken place there since the 1880s. In 1980 Tallinn Bay was the scene of the yachting regatta of the 22nd Moscow Olympic Games. World Championship competitions in the 470 Class for under 21-year-olds take place in Tallinn Bay in August 1998. It is in the 470 Class that Estonian yachtmen have been the most succsessful internationally. Twin brothers Tõnu and Toomas Tõniste won medals in this Class in two consecutive Olympic Games - silver medals in 1988 in Seoul and bronze medals in 1992 in Barcelona. They also performed well at the yachting regatta of the 25th Olympic Games in Atlanta.
