COAT OF ARMS

A large regular issue in 13 different denominations. Printed since 1928 until replaced with the regular issue of the President of the Republic Konstantin Päts in 1936. The 1 Sent value was reprinted in 1940.

Design by Gunther Reindorff, showing the three leopards of the Coat of Arms of Estonia.

Paper: Different papers, all machine-made wove, with a fine mesh pattern, but of various thickness and texture, were used. For practical purposes all varieties are grouped into three distinctly different categories:
Thin paper: a thin translucent (0.05-0.06 mm) paper, where the design is visible on the gummed side. Origin unknown (probably German).
Thick paper: a medium thick paper (about 0.07 mm) was in use since October 1929. The design is hardly visible on the reverse.
Chalk-surfaced paper: a yellowish grey thick chalksurfaced paper (appr. 0.09 mm) of German origin. This paper was only used for the reprint of 1 Sent value in 1940. A very limited part of the reprint was made on the pure white chalk-surfaced paper of English origin.

Gum: The earliest printings have a yellowish and shiny gum. The gum on the thicker paper is dull.

Print: Printing sheet of 400 stamps, arranged in four panes of 100, separated by gutters. Every pane has marginal figures on the left and top margins. These figures appear in different sizes. The significance, if any, of the differences is unknown. The small numbers usually are printed on thin paper, but there are exceptions.
Ali stamps have an underprinted network, slightly larger than the pane of 100 (19.5 x 24.2 cm). It comes in two widths, the narrow net (20 cm) and the wide net (20.5 cm). Color bars appear in the vertical centre gutter and in the right margin.
The numberof stamps printed will be shown under individual stamps and are based on a copy of the official stock-book of the GPO, recently found. The small number of stamps destroyed in 1941 has been deducted.

Reprint in 1940: It has been generally accepted up to now, that the re-print was made in one printing of 200.000 only, and that the 1 Sent stamps destroyed by the Soviet authorities were the remainders of earlier printings. It has now been proven that this was not the case. The reprint was ordered and completed in four printings, each of 200.000 - 800.000 in total. 478.539 of the reprints were destroyed in 1941. Although a small number of stamps of previous printings may have been included in this figure, it is considered to be unlikely. The actual number of the reprints issued should consequently be 321.461.

The Booklet: The first Estonian stamp booklet was produced in 1930. The stamps of the Coat of Arms Issue were used one block of six of the 5 Senti value and three blocks of six of the 10 Senti. Advertising appears on the front and back covers, and on three interleaving sheets.
The stamps are printed on thick paper. The 10 Senti sheets have large marginal figures and the 5 Senti small ones. It may indicate that a special printing was made for the booklet.
The size of the booklet is 70 x 52 mm, the cover is orange carton paper. The ads are printed in black.
The normal price: Kr. 2.10. 10.000 booklets were issued. 110 of these were destroyed by the Soviet authorities in 1941. The booklet is a rarity. Price: 400 USD (Please note that all prices are estimates in USD, based on the average retail market of 1985, when the original catalogue/handbook was written. The prices are considerably higher today).

Perforation: Comb perforation 14 1/2 x 14.
A limited number of perforation varieties - wide and narrow stamps, double and diamond perforation and rough perforation are known. Furthermore, partly imperforate items are in existence of the 2, 5, 10 and 20 Senti values. These originate from partly perforated sheets and are rare.
The imperforate stamps, with or without the protective network, are proofs.

Forgeries are not known. Regular stamps with cut off perforations exist, even on covers.
Valid until December 31, 1940.
