INVALIDS
Charity
issue to benefit the invalids of the War of Independence. The stamps
were sold with a surtax of 10 or 15 penni, and were to be used within
the country. However, they were accepted also for the foreign mail.
Design
by Karl Jürgens (Kaarel Joon), later modified, showing invalids
returning from the war.
Paper:
Soft and porous, dirty grey in color. Product of the papermill in
Räpina, being a refined newsprint.
Gum:
brownish and streaky.
Print:
Lithographed by Eduard Bergmann in Tartu. Printer's sheet consisted
of 260 stamps, arranged in panes of 100 and 30, separated by gutters.
After the printing the panes were severed. The counter panes consisted
of 100 or 30 stamps. Only a few unsevered panes were overlooked and
were sold to the public. One printing only.
Perforation:
Imperforate. Postmaster perforations are known.
Proofs
are in existence.
Forgeries
are known.
Valid:
Sold over the counter until June 30,1921. Valid until March 31, 1926.
Cancelled stamps, especially on cover, are rare.
