INVALIDS

Charity issue to benefit the invalids of the War of Independence. The stamps were sold with a surtax of 10 or 15 penni, and were to be used within the country. However, they were accepted also for the foreign mail.

Design by Karl Jürgens (Kaarel Joon), later modified, showing invalids returning from the war.

Paper: Soft and porous, dirty grey in color. Product of the papermill in Räpina, being a refined newsprint.

Gum: brownish and streaky.

Print: Lithographed by Eduard Bergmann in Tartu. Printer's sheet consisted of 260 stamps, arranged in panes of 100 and 30, separated by gutters. After the printing the panes were severed. The counter panes consisted of 100 or 30 stamps. Only a few unsevered panes were overlooked and were sold to the public. One printing only.

Perforation: Imperforate. Postmaster perforations are known.

Proofs are in existence.

Forgeries are known.

Valid: Sold over the counter until June 30,1921. Valid until March 31, 1926. Cancelled stamps, especially on cover, are rare.
