Chinese alligator (Alligator sinensis) A smallish and very rare crocodilian living only on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It is estimated that there are no more than 300—400 Chinese alligators living in the wild. Besides local protective actions for the survival of the species the support of captive breeding programmes in zoos throughout the world is needed. Breeding the Chinese alligator, a number of zoos, among them Tallinn Zoo, have joined their efforts under the leadership of the Wildlife Conservation Society in New York.
