  • The holiday today known as Valentine Day probably derives from the ancient Roman fertility festival of Lupercalia (February 15). In the course of time it became associated with the feast day of St Valentine (February 14) - two Roman priests of the same name martyred by Emperor Claudius II in the 3rd century. St Valentine has traditionally been considered the patron saint of lovers.
In the Middle Ages Valentine Day messages of affection were recited, and often sung. The first Valentine Day card was sent in 1415 by Charles, Duke of Orleans, from the Tower of London to his wife.
In the 19th century printed valentines came into wider use. Today, Valentine Day is marked in many world countries.
