The traditional toys of the Estonian peasantry were made of wood and other available materials; they were characterized by simple design close to nature and their main aim was to teach children different kinds of work in their future life. In the Soviet period toys in Estonia were produced by such major enterprises as Salvo, Norma and Polümeer. Toys, cars toy animals, building blocks and other toys were mainly made of plastic, foam rubber and other artificial materials. Today, making of toys has been concentrated into small companies and individual craftsmen; once again they use natural materials, artisans’ traditional methods and receive inspiration from the folk art.
